LONDON FINAL MEETING - DECEMBER 21
Got any last minute questions? There will be a final London Question/Answer Meeting on MONDAY, DECEMBER 21 at 7:00pm in the CHS Cafeteria. You will receive final plans, updated information, and insurance information at this meeting. At this point, ALL students should have made plans to exchange their own currency for the trip. Your bank will be able to make this exchange for you with proper notice, or AAA can have it in 2 days.

HOLIDAY CONCERT - DECEMBER 14
The annual Carter Band Holiday Concert will be on MONDAY, DECEMBER 14 at Chilhowee Hills Baptist Church. Students need to be on stage, ready to go at 6:30pm. The concert will begin at 7:00pm with the Percussion Ensemble, followed by the Jazz Ensemble and the Symphonic Band.

LONDON TRAVELERS - REHEARSALS
All London Parade participants will be rehearsing the parade music and drill on the following days and times:

  • Wednesday, December 16, 1:00 - 3:30pm
  • Thursday, December 17, 1:00 - 3:30pm
  • Friday, December 18, 1:00 - 3:30pm

 

KNOXVILLE VETERAN'S DAY PARADE
The band's first parade appearance of the year will be at the Knoxville Veteran's Day Parade in Downtown Knoxville on Wednesday, November 11. Here's the schedule:

COLORGUARD PRACTICES BEGIN - JUNE 2
PERCUSSION WORKOUTS BEGIN - JUNE 9

Colorguard and Percussion, its already time! Colorguard practices will begin on June 2 and will be every tuesday from 4pm - 6pm. Percussion workouts will also begin on tuesdays starting June 9 at the same time. If you are on guard or wanting to tryout for drumline, you need to be at these clinics.


2009-2010 DRUM MAJORS NAMED

After intense auditions, the 2009-10 Drum Majors have been selected. They are ROSS ARDEN, DWAYNE BENN, & SHELLE LAUGHLIN. These three will be excellent leaders for the upcoming year.

Only compliments and praises were heard for the Carter Band after the afternoon performance for the Lord Mayor of Westminster. The invitation ceremony was asbolutely wonderful. Great job band!! KNOX COUNTY MARCHING BAND EXHIBITION - OCT 16
The Knox County Marching Band Exhibition will be this Thursday, October 16, at Central High School in Knoxville. All 13 Knox County High School Marching Bands will be performing in this event as an opportunity for every group to see all of the Knox County band shows. Admission to the event is free. Don't forget that our first afterschool reahearsal is on August 11 from 3:45-5:45. We will be taking the band pictures for the football program and website updates. Remember to bring your khaki shorts.

WE SURVIVED BAND CAMP!! - A Note from the Director
What a great two weeks of hard work and commitment! Congratulations students on your efforts and a fantastic performance on parent night! Having the first two tunes on the field, marching AND playing, is no easy task, and you performed wonderfully well! It's very encouraging for the remainder of the season. Your hard work will pay off this season with a fantastic marching show!! I hope everyone who attended had a great time celerating the end of band camp with midnight bowling and lock-in! As for dancing at 4:00 in the morning, I thought it was great (although my skill needed a little refining)! Get some rest, see you soon!

SUMMER CHECK-IN DAYS SCHEDULED
All band students who plan on marching this season must drop by the band room during one of the summer check-in days listed below. Students will pay their band fee, turn in their supply order forms and performance contracts, and be assigned their uniform for the season. If for some reason you cannot drop in at any of the listed dates, you must email Mr. McCurry. This summer's check-in dates are:

2008 SPRING CONCERT - APRIL 28
Don't miss the final formal performanaces of the Carter High School Concert Ensembles! The Spring Concert will be held on MONDAY, APRIL 28 at 7:00pm in the Carter High School Auditorium. The band will be performing repetoire consisting of some lighter "pops" music. Guest conductors will include Mr. David Correll, Carter Middle School Band Director, and Ms. Jessica Byrd, CHS Student Teacher. We also have 5 students who will be inducted into the TRI-M International Music Honors Society on this evening. We have alot to celebrate -- Hope to see you there!!

The Carter High School Marching Band will be making an appearance in this year's Dogwood Arts Festival Parade on FRIDAY, APRIL 25. This is for all members of this year's marching band, even if you are not in concert band this semester. The schedule for the day/evening is:

3:30 - Return to Band Room for Pizza and Drinks - $$

As the Carter Bands work hard to prepare for Concert Band Festival, it is again time for the Festival Preview Concert. This concert will be THURSDAY, MARCH 6, at 6:30pm in the CHS Auditorium. This is a quick concert intended as a "dress rehearsal" for concert festival. Students need to be at the school, dressed in concert black, by 6:00pm. Come preview what the bands will be playing at Concert Festival this year and help us prepare for a great performence.

WINTERGUARD SCORES BIG AT 2ND COMPETITION

Another big day for the Carter High School Winterguard at their second competition held at Gibbs High School. The girls had a fantastic run, raising their score from the previous competition by 16 points!!! This is a big accomplishment for these girls ... congratulations .... keep up the good work!! The winterguard will compete one last time at the Karns High School CIPA Show. If you haven't had a chance to see their performance, come out and support these young ladies at their last show. Thanks to all the parents who have continued to help out!!

WINTERGUARD EARNS SECOND PLACE!!!guard 1
CONGRATULATIONS to the Carter High School Winterguard for placing 2nd in their first competition at Maryville Intermediate School. These girls have worked exceptionally hard to perfect their show and really showed it on the floor. It was an outstanding performance!! Keep up the good work! The guard will compete next week at the Gibbs High School CIPA show.

BRING YOUR PARENTS TO SCHOOL DAY - FEB 19
Carter High School's 2nd Annual Bring Your Parents to School Day will be held on Tuesday, February 19. Parents can choose to come to one of their student's classes or attend all day. Hang out at the locker, eat lunch in the cafeteria and experience a day in the life of a present-day high school student. This is a great opportunity for you to see all of the great things going on at Carter High School. Don't miss out - call the administrative office to register (932-3434).

CONCERT AND SYMPHONIC BAND FEES DUE
If your child is participating in Freshman Concert Band or Symphonic Band this year, please send in the $50 Spring Fee. This fee pays for music, festival registration fees, transporttation, and many other items this semester.

FALL BAND PICTURES SENT HOME
This fall's individual band pictures have just arrived. Students should have brought them home for you to see. These are some of the best individual pictures that we have had! Lifetouch did an excellent job! If you would like to order any of these pictures or packages, please turn in you completed form and money in the provided envelope to the band office no later than FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1. If you have a student who was in marching band, but not in concert band, please send them to the band office to pick up their proof package as soon as possible.

CHS BAND RECEIVES SUPERIOR AT FINAL COMPEITION
Congratulations to the Carter High School Marching Hornets on a rating of SUPERIOR in the Smokey Mountain Marching Band Invitational on Saturday, October 20. In addition to the a superior rating, the Percussion received 2nd place drumline in AAAA, the guard received second place guard in AAAA, and the majorettes received First Place in AAAA and Champion in AAA and AAAA. CONGRATULATIONS BAND!!! What a wonderful way to end our competition season! Thanks for all your hard work, you have much to be proud of!!

CHS BAND EARNS SUPERIOR RATING
Congratulations to the Carter High School Band for earning a SUPERIOR rating at the UPPER CUMBERLAND MARCHING CONTEST on Saturday, September 29. The band recieved straight ones in musical performance, musical effect, visual effect, and visual execution. In addition, the Drumline and Front Ensemble were awarded 2nd place percussion in the contest and the Drum Majors received a Superior Rating. The band was the third place overall band in the competition. Congratulations Band!!!!

ETSBOA JUNIOR CLINIC - THE RESULTS ARE IN !!!!!!
Congratulations to Nathan Arnwine, trombone, and Taylor Franklin, trumpet, for both excelling in their ETSBOA Junior Clinic Auditions. They both scored high enough to be accepted into the GOLD band! Nathan had the highest trombone score of the day and is principal trombone. Congratuations to these two for an outstanding job!!! Keep up the good work, you make us proud.

This year's annual Knox County Band Exhibition will be held at the Bearden High School Football Stadium on Tuesday evening, October 16. All of Knox County's bands will be performing their 2007 half-time shows at the exhibition. BAND HAT / VISOR MONEY DUE FRIDAY - 9/7
Students, remember that your hat / visor money is due this Friday (Sept. 7). If you plan on removing your shako hat in the stands, you must have either the Carter Hat or Visor. Make sure your personalize your hat (on the inside) so you can identify it.

CHICKEN 'N' DUMPLIN DINNER A HUGE SUCCESS
The CHS Cafeteria was packed solid for 3 hours on Thursday, August 30 for the band's annual Chicken N Dumplin dinner. Thank you to all who volunteered and students who worked tireless shifts to make sure everything ran smoothly. Special thanks to Robin Chamberlain and to Dollie and her helpers for managing the kitchen so well. Hope you didn't miss the best meal of the year, but if you did, we'll see you next year!

DOLLIE'S ANNUAL CHICKEN 'N' DUMPLIN DINNER - 8/30
Y'all come and get your fill of Dollie's Famous Chicken 'n' Dumplins at the band's annual homecoming Chicken 'n' Dumplin dinner on August 30. This is a favorite of parents, students, and everyone that comes year after year! It is definitely something you don't want to miss. Tickets are available from any band student for $7.00. The menu is loaded with Chicken 'n' Dumplins, many good country vegetables, and plenty of deserts and drinks! Get your tickets, and take it with you if you wish, or join us in the CHS Cafeteria. Serving times are 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. YOU CAN ONLY GET THIS ONCE A YEAR -- DON'T MISS IT!!!!!


CHICKEN 'N' DUMPLIN' DINNER TICKETS SENT HOME

Tickets for this year's annual Dollie's Chicken 'n' Dumplin Dinner were sent home on Monday, August 20. All band students were given 5 tickets to sell, please sell these and return the money to the band office ASAP. If you need additional tickets, they are available in the band office. Invite everyone you know - everyone that experiences this, always comes back -- IT'S THAT GOOD!!! All monies raised goes to homecoming.


MEET THE HORNETS NIGHT - AUGUST 9
Meet the Hornets Night will be held this Thursday, August 9, at 6:30 pm in the Carter High School Stadium. Everyone will meet the teams, the band, the cheerleaders, the dance team, coaches, and many other important hornets! **Band students will need to be in the band room at 5:15 pm, ready to begin rehearsal at 5:30 pm. BE ON TIME!! We have to learn the fight song and some pep tunes before we march to the field. Dress is khaki shorts and iBand t-shirts. We should be done by 7:30ish. See you there! Oh yeah....admission is FREE.


FOOTBALL SEASON TICKETS RENEWALS AND SALES
Anyone wishing to RENEW their season tickets from last year must do this on FRIDAY, AUGUST 3 in the CHS Office. (No new passes will be sold on this day - only renewals of the same passes from last year.) Starting MONDAY, AUGUST 6, season tickets will go on sale in the CHS Office on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE basis. Season tickets are $40 and cover only the 5 regular season home games. (Not Play-offs)


CHELSEA PEARSON NAMED HOMECOMING CANDIDATE
Congratulations to this year's Band Homecoming Candidate, Chelsea Pearson. Chelsea was elected as the band's candidate on the last day of band camp. She has many great ideas and will call on you to help her out. Remember that homecoming funds pay for many band activities - everyone needs to help out. Congratulations Chelsea!

Congratulations to the Carter High School Majorettes for their successes in the Drum Majorettes of America National Competition at Gardner Webb University. Autumn Jackson, Jessica Hendricks, and Katie Pyle competed and won the championship in the Specialty Twirl Team and also recieved First Runners Up in the Open Specialty Twirl Team. Congratulations Majorettes ... keep up the great work!! The Carter Majorettes are coached by Ms. Jeanni Grigsby.

A HUGE thank you to the area churches that provided lunch and snacks for the band during band camp! Lyons Creek Baptist, Chilhowee Hills Baptist, Thorngrove Baptist, and Ebeneezer Baptist churches spent much time and effort providing our lunches for the second week of band camp ... and they were wonderful! Thanks to all of the volunteers who showed up to cook, serve, and clean. A special thank you, also, to the Lyons Creek Sunday School Class that provided popsicles for the band in our hot afternoon rehearsals!

2007-08 CHS MAJORETTES SELECTED
Congrations to AUTUMN JACKSON, JESSICA HENDRICKS, ALI INMAN, and KATIE PYLE for being selected as the 2007-08 CHS Majorettes. They too did an incredible job in their auditions. Congratulations ladies.

 

CARTER MAJORETTES WIN STATE COMPETITION !!
The CHS Majorettes, Autumn Jackson, Ali Inman, and Jessica Hendricks won FIRST place in the DMA (Drum Majorettes of America) state competition on May 12, 2007, winning the High School State Title. They are now eligible to compete in the Nationals Competition at Gardner-Webb University in July. Autumn Jackson was also selected as the DMA Senior Miss Halftime majorette for the state of Tennessee. Congratulations ladies and best of luck at the national competition!!!!!

MRS. MESSER SELECTED FOR TMEA AWARD
Congratulations to Mrs. Messer for being selected as the Tennessee Music Educator's Association Young Music Educator of the Year. This is a very prestigious award in the state of Tennessee and Mrs. Messer is very deserving. The award will be presented to her at the opeining ceremony of the TMEA State Conference in Nashville on April 19. Be sure and give her your congratulations!! S


2007 BAND CAMP INFORMATION SENT HOME
Information and forms for the 2007 Carter Band Camp and Fall Schedule was mailed to student homes on May 30. If you did not receive a packet in the mail, please e-mail us your correct address -or- download the forms on the FORMS page. Many forms can be completed online now. REMEMBER: MED FORMS and BAND FEES are due the FIRST DAY of band camp. Please send your child prepared.

 

2007 BAND CAMP DATES SET - PLAN NOW
This years band camp dates are as follows:

July 16-20 Freshman Band Camp (Mon-Wed) 9am - 12noon
  Full Band Camp (Thur-Fri) 9am - 12noon
  Guard/Percussion Sectionals (M-F) 1pm - 4pm
     
July 23-27 Full Band Camp 9am - 9pm

Plan for camp now! Remember, Band Camp is mandatory, you must attend to have a spot in the Fall Marching Show. If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call the band office anytime. All necessary forms will be available online soon. Look for your band camp information in the mail.

 

 

JEREMY SMITH SELECTED FOR SOUSA AWARD
Congratulations to Jeremy Smith for being selected as the recipient of the 2007 John Philip Sousa Award for Band. This award is given each year the a senior who excels in music and is the top award given. Jeremy was first chair percussionist at All-State East and participated in the Tennessee All-State Band. Congratulations, Jeremy, on all of you accomplishments.

 

WILSON/BURROUGHS SELECTED FOR DIRECTORS AWARD
Congratulations to David Wilson and Casey Burroughs who were selected for the 2006-07 Carter Band Directors Awards. These students went well above and beyond their duties in the band program to ensure that the band was successful. Congratulation David & Casey and thanks for all of your help.

 

COURTNEY JONES RECEIVES HASLAM SCHOLARSHIP
Congratulations to Courtney Jones for being selected as the Haslam Family Foundation Scholarship Recipient for this school year. Courtney is an outstanding musician and a model student for the band program. The scholarship is given in appreciation for Mr. Haslam and his contribution to the Carter High School Band Program as it was begining to grow. Congratulations Courtney.

 

2007 COLOR GUARD TRYOUTS - MAY 10
Anyone interested in trying out for the 2007 CHS Colorguard should download the following mini-clinic and try-out schedule. (CLICK HERE) The tryouts will be on Tuesday, May 10.

 

2007 BAND BANQUET - MAY 12
This year's band banquet will be held at the Calhoun's on Neyland Drive on Saturday afternoon May 12. A buffet lunch will be served and you must make reservations to attend. A reservation form is available HERE (YOU CAN NOW FILL IT OUT ONLINE AND PRINT IT!!). Please complete this form and return it to the band office ASAP. This is one of the year's favored events, don't miss out. Arrival time is 11:30 AM.

 

LASAGNA DINNER & SPRING CONCERT - MAY 1
The Annual Spring Concert of the instrumental department will be on May 1 at 7:00 PM. This year we will be having a lasagna dinner and pre-concert solo and ensemble recital before the concert in the cafeteria. Tickets for the meal are $8.00 and can be purchased in the band office or from a band student. This will definitely be something you won't want to miss. Come eat and enjoy a great evening of music from the Symphonic Band, Freshman Band, Jazz Band and numerous pre-concert ensembles and soloists. b

 

SYMPHONIC BAND CONCERT & BENEFIT - APRIL 29
The Carter High Symphonic Band will be having a benefit concert at Thorngrove Baptist Church on Sunday Evening, April 29, at 6:00 P.M. Come and hear an evening of Music on the Lawn (or inside if it rains) from the Symphonic Band. Students should be dressed and in place by 5:30 PM. benefit conc

If you took some great Disney pictures, send them to Mr. McCurry here or bring them on a CD or any camera memory card (easiest). We would love to have a Disney picture page!! I've seen lots of awesome pictures (and some pretty funny pictures) from the trip!!!

ETSBOA CONCERT FESTIVAL - APRIL 2
The Carter High School Symphonic Band will be participating in the Upper Area ETSBOA Concert Festival at Science Hill High School in Johnson City, TN on April 2, 2007. The day's schedule will be available online HERE assoon as we have it.


JAZZ BAND SCHEDULE REVISED

Jazz Band rehearsal will no longer take place after school on mondays. Instead, we will rehearse one day a week during fourth period after Concert Festival to prepare for the spring concert. This should be more convenient for those participating.

FESTIVAL PREVIEW CONCERT - FEBRUARY 22
The Carter High School Bands and Choir, along with the Carter Middle School Eighth Grade Concert Band will be performing their festival pieces on Thursday evening, February 22 at the Carter High School Auditorium. The concert will begin at 7:00 PM. This performance will serve as a practice for ETSBOA Concert Festival on March 13.


BRING YOUR PARENT TO SCHOOL DAY - FEBRUARY 20
Ever wondered what goes on at Carter High School each day?  Well now you can find out first hand. Carter High will be having its very first "Bring Your Parents to School Day" on February 20. There will be two sessions available (AM and PM) where you may attend all of your child's classes, eat lunch in the cafeteria (on us!), and hang out just like the good ole days! This is something you don't want to miss out on, so call the school office for your reservation today!! Additional information is also available from the school office.

Concert Band Fees are due on Friday, January 19. Concert Band Fees are $50.00. Checks should be made out to Carter High School.


 
THIRD DISNEY PAYMENT DUE - JANUARY 19
Students should turn in their third Disney payment of $140.00 to the band office by January 19. For a payment schedule, download the November Newsletter HERE. Please remember that all money goes to Fair Share before applied to the Disney Trip. All Fees and Fair Share must be paid for students to be eligible for any trips.



FAIR SHARE ACCOUNTS DUE
All students Fair Share accounts should be paid in full by this point. If you have not paid your fair share account, please make plans to do so ASAP. Please remember, all fees and fair share must be paid before students are eligible for the Disney trip.

Courtney Jones, the band's homecoming candidate, was crowned homecoming queen at the Carter / Gibbs Homecoming Game on October 13, 2006! Courtney worked very, very hard and did a fantastic job. Congratulations Courtney and THANK YOU BAND
