Mr. Matthew McCurry
Director of Bands

Mr. Matthew J. McCurry   is the Director of Bands at Carter High School after completing three years as the Associate Director of Bands. He began teaching in 2002 as the Director of Bands at Holston Middle School and Assistant Director at Gibbs High School in Knoxville. Mr. McCurry graduated from Powell High School where he received the John Philip Sousa Award for Band and from Carson-Newman College where he holds a Bachelor's Degree in Instrumental and Vocal Music Education as well as Master's Degree in Educational Supervision and Administration. His primary instrument is piano with a secondary in trombone. While at C-N, he was president and principal trombonist of the instrumental ensembles as well as Business Manager for the C-N Acappella Choir. He studied Instrumental Conducting with Dr. Marshall Forrester as well as Instrumentation, Administration, and Audio Production. Mr. McCurry is an active guest clinician and is the East Tennessee School Band & Orchestra Association's Representative to the Middle Area. He has made numerous appearances as a guest conductor of the Carson-Newman College Symphonic Band as well as the East Tennessee Youth Wind Ensemble. Mr. McCurry is the Assistant Director of the Carson-Newman Summer Music Camp and is organist at Fountain CIty Presbyterian Church.

 

 


Mrs. Angie Messer
Director of Bands - Carter Middle School Bands

Tennessee's 2007 Outstanding Young Music Educator !!

Mrs. Angie Messer  is in her first year as Director of Bands at Carter Middle School after completing a very successful seven years at Carter High School. Under her direction, the Carter High School Band went from 35 members to well over 175. She is a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where she served as Clarinet Section Leader for three years and as a Field Instructor for one year. Prior to coming to Carter High, she taught at Bearden High School as the Assistant Director of Bands for four years and at Whittle Springs Middle School. Mrs. Messer teaches and conducts the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands In addition to being a model Language! teacher. Mrs. Messer's professional and honorary affiliations include the East Tennessee Band and Orchestra Association, Tennessee Music Educators Association, and Who's Who Among American High School Teachers. She and her husband have three daughters, Ploomie McKinnon, Zoee Drusilla, and, as of May 2, 2008, Maggie Belle.

Mr. Kevin Ross
Assistant Director of Bands - Carter Middle School
Assistant Director of Bands - Carter High School

 

Mr. Kevin Ross  is in his first year as the Assistant Director of Bands at Carter Middle School and at Carter High School. Mr. Ross has most recently taught at Fulton High School as the Director of Bands as well as teaching at Central High and Austin-East High Schools in Knoxville. In addition, he has taught in Illinois, Iowa, and Virginia. Mr. Ross holds a B.A. in Music Education from Western Illinois University and a Masters in Music from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he studied conducting with Gary Sousa. He is a member of the East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association, Music Educators National Conference and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He and his wife Janet, a teacher at Holston Middle School, have one son, Philip, who is finishing his senior year in pre-med at Tennessee Wesleyan College. Mr. Ross is active in the music ministry of Wallace Memorial Baptist Church.

 

 


Mr. David Correll
Assistant Director of Bands - Retired

Mr. David Correll retired from Music Education after his ninth year as the the Director of Bands at Carter Middle School and after a successfull 36 years in music education. He recieved his undergraduate degree in Music Education from East Tennessee State University as well as a graduate degree in Music Education from the University of Tennessee. Before coming to Carter, he served as the Director of Bands at John I Burton High School in Norton, Virginia from 1972-1974; Carroll County High School in Hillsvale, VA, from 1974-1975; Unicoi County High School in Erwin, TN from 1975-77; Graduate Assistant at the University of Tennessee from 1977-1978; Kellam High School in Virginia Beach, VA from 1978-1989; and Halls Middle School in Knoxville, TN from 1989-1999. Mr. Correll's professional affiliations include Music Educators National Conference, East Tennessee School Band & Orchestra Association, Tennessee School Band Director's Association, and the Virginia Band & Orchestra Director's Association. He and his wife, Linda, have two children, David William and Kimberly Kay and two grand-daughters, Caitlyn Elizabeth and Hannah Kay. Congratulations Mr. Correll and thanks for 36 years of dedication to music education.
